Much like how Latine families and communities remain tight-knit and celebrate milestones together, the Cornell Latine community is no different. On October 13, 2023, students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members came together at Willard Straight Hall’s Memorial Room for LSP’s 30th Annual Unity Dinner in celebration of Latinx Heritage Month. Organized by the Unity Dinner Planning Committee, the enchanting evening was filled with smiles, conversation, catering by Catering by Luna and everyones finest formal wear.
The evening highlights consisted of opening and closing remarks by Professor Maria Cristina Garcia, Director of Latina/o Studies; performance from a new student organization, Mariachi Regional en Cornell University; stand up comedy by Melissa Chu ‘25; Lizbeth Ortiz ’25 performing a drama skit; and spoken word by María Lima Valdez ’25. Cornell alumna, Karla Vergara ‘11 J.D. Boston College ‘17 gave an uplifting keynote address about her time at Cornell, her culture and advice to current Latine students at Cornell. Salsa Pa’lante awed the audience with their vibrant and upbeat routine.
Gaby Carmona ‘25, Dyson, LAL co-chair and Gio Rodriguez ‘26, CALS, LSP student intern, were the evening emcees ensuring the room was not low on laughter and energy while keeping the logistics of the night running smoothly.
Juan Jaimes Costilla, Associate Dean of Students and Director of Latinx Empowerment and LSP student intern Daniela Rojas ‘25, A&S were the evening photographers, capturing moments in the photo booth and the Memorial Room. Sherla Zhagnay ‘25, AAP and LSP student intern was the music emcee, curating the evening’s playlists.
The Unity Dinner Planning Committee was composed of LSP student interns and staff, representatives from LAL, LLC, Dean of Students and Cornell Conference and Event Services.
The 30th Annual Unity Dinner was a huge success. Attendees were having conversations in English and Spanish accompanied by alumni telling students stories about their Latine experience at Cornell, students laughing, and memories were made. Latina/o Studies is looking forward to more Unity Dinners to come, more people to meet, with more cultures to embrace.
