Undergraduate Research Grants

Undergraduate research grants are available to students who wish to engage in research projects whose ultimate goal is to enhance the understanding and knowledge of the Latina/o experience in the United States. Preference is given to registered Latina/o Studies minors for these awards.

Only full-time Cornell University students who are sophomores or upperclassmen, and in good academic standing with a G.P.A of at least a 3.0 are eligible. Preference will be given to proposals for research projects that are to be conducted during the regular academic year, but proposals for intersession and summer research will be considered if the project can only be conducted during this period. Students enrolled in public service and internship programs are encouraged to apply. Funding will not be allocated for research occurring during the student's final semester at Cornell.

The application packet must include:

  1. A 3-5 page proposal that addresses the following:
    • The purpose of the research project and its significance to Latina/o Studies.
    • What methodology will you utilize to collect the data or documentation for your project (archival, quantitative, surveys, participant observer, secondary and published primary sources, interviews experimental, etc.).
    • A brief narrative describing how the funds will be used, and a budget.
  2. A copy of the applicant's most recent transcript, resume, and personal statement about career objectives.   
    • Examples of research-related activities that will be funded include, but are not limited to:
    • Acquisition of documents, reports and books.
    • Travel and registration expenses to attend professional conferences.
    • Photocopy expenses.
    • Purchase of research related software and hardware, or specialized equipment.
    • Travel to libraries, archives, special collections or other research sites.
  3. A reference letter from a faculty member familiar with the student's project.

Submit materials to the Latina/o Studies Program Office, 434 Rockefeller Hall.
Grant recipients will be required to present their work at a colloquium during the Fall or Spring semester.

Graduate Research Grants

Submissions accepted on rolling basis, at least 4 weeks before travel.

Graduate student research grants are available to students working on projects that focus on some aspect of the Latina/o experience in the United States. Preference will be given to Latina/o Studies minors with projects that will result in a master's thesis or doctoral dissertation. Only full time Cornell University students who are in good academic standing with a G.P.A of at least 3.0 are eligible.

The application packet must include:

  1. A 3-5 page proposal that addresses the following:
    • A brief outline of the larger research project and its significance to the field of Latina/o Studies.
    • A description of the specific research to be conducted, and the methodology to be utilized to collect the data or documentation for your project (archival, quantitative, surveys, participant observer, secondary and published primary sources, interviews experimental, etc.).
    • A brief narrative decribing how the funds will be used, and a budget.
  2. A copy of the applicant's most recent transcript, CV, and statement about career objectives.  
    • Examples of research-related activities that will be funded include, but are not limited to:
    • Acquisition of documents, reports and books.
    • Travel and registration expenses to attend professional conferences.
    • Photocopy expenses.
    • Purchase of research related software and hardware, or specialized equipment.
    • Travel to libraries, archives, special collections or other research sites.
  3. Letter of recommendation from a faculty member familiar with the student’s research, which can be either the chair of the student's graduate committee or the LSP minor faculty member on the committee.
