The Latina/o Studies Program and Latina/o/x Student Success Office welcomes the new Director of the ¡CULTURA! Ithaca program, Krystall Escobedo. Originally from Texas, Krystall completed her degree in Sociology from Ithaca College in 2014 and has remained involved in the Ithaca Latinx community in her post-grad life.
Krystall works as a paralegal at LawNY and has a radio show on WRFI called Pa’bajo con DJ SucioNasty. She is passionate about the subversive and genre-blending alternative music by Latinx folks, and plans to extend this passion into her work as Director of ¡CULTURA! Ithaca.
¡CULTURA! Ithaca works to foster and share Latina/o & Latin American culture with the Tompkins County community through free and low-cost arts and education experiences. The program aims to civically engage and educate the public on finances, health, legal issues and other topics relating to Latinxs at-large.
Working in conjunction with the Latina/o Studies Program, ¡CULTURA! serves as a gateway for students to participate in events in the Ithaca community, with the goal of celebrating and exploring Latinx cultures.
“My main vision for ¡CULTURA! is to elevate and complicate our understanding of latinidad in all its forms” said Krystall. “I hope to highlight the ways pan-latinidad is integrated into our cultural landscape, celebrate where it stands out and honor the pastiche of experiences & art forms.”
CULTURA's downtown office, located in the Tompkins County Workers Center on the 2nd Floor of Autumn Leaves Used Bookstore on the Commons, acts as a resource center and gathering space for Latin@s and amig@s to come together.
Again, we warmly welcome Krystall into our Latinx community! For information about ¡CULTURA!, you can contact Krystall at imawalrusdotcom@gmail.com.
