Romance Studies and Latina/o Studies to offer Spanish for Heritage Speakers in Fall 2021

New course alert! Did you grow up speaking Spanish at home or in your neighborhood?  Would you like to perfect or expand your language skills?

In Fall 2021, Latina/o Studies and Romance Studies will offer two levels of “Spanish for Heritage Speakers" with Professor Mary K. Redmond.

A low intermediate level course, SPAN 1250/LSP 1250, will be offered at two times: 9:05 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (M/W/F), or 10:10 a.m. M/W/F. High intermediate Spanish for Heritage Speakers, SPAN 2000/LSP 2020, will be offered at 11:15 a.m. M/W/F.

In these courses, students can advance their capacity to use Spanish in new contexts while exploring topics from Latin American, Spanish and US Latinx cultures. The courses will include projects, interviews, readings, presentations and discussions to develop all language skills. Themes frequently included will be Spanglish, code-switching, individual or family identity as US Latinx, as well as the the history, arts, traditions and literatures of Latin America, and Latinx in the US. The courses will also include linguistic diversity and current issues in Latinx communities.

Students may have taken some Spanish before, but in many cases, they many never have had a class. To start, students should take the basic placement test LPS at https://collt.lrc.cornell.edu. Advanced students will also take the CASE later.  Each student has a unique language experience, and interested students should contact Mary K. Redmond with placement questions at mkr4@cornell.edu
