Each year, the Latina/o Studies Program looks to hire students from each graduating class, allowing upperclass student interns to pass down the torch. LSP would like to welcome three new student interns from the class of 2027: Hayley Marino (she/her) from the College of Human Ecology, Ángel Escamilla (he/him) from the College of Arts & Sciences, and Angélica Ochoa (she/they) from the College of Arts & Sciences.
“I joined LSP because I wanted to be a part of a program where students can come and feel a sense of belonging,” Marino emphasized. Having a space where people share a common background is important to Marino. The Orange County native, majoring in Human Development in the College of Human Ecology is “looking forward to exploring” new communities, opportunities, and making memories with friends. She has a yorkipoo dog named Teddy and enjoys “building challenging puzzles while listening to music.”
Escamilla joins Cornell from New York City. Majoring in Chemistry in the College of Arts & Sciences, he joined LSP to be involved “with the Latino community on campus” while finding comfort and support from other Latin@/e students. While at Cornell, Escamilla is looking forward to learning, making friends and personal development. He is also double jointed.
Lastly, Ochoa, who comes from Cicero, IL is studying Computer Science and Astronomy in the College of Arts & Sciences, joined LSP to learn about their cultural selves both inside and outside the intern office. “On a campus that sometimes feels isolating, I was drawn to the welcoming and supportive space that LSP offered for Latin@/e students,” Ochoa remarked. While at Cornell, they are looking forward to “taking part in research and gaining new experiences in the fields I wish to pursue. Ochoa loves to paint and draw, taking inspiration from romanticism, their favorite period. Current LSP staff cannot wait to get to know the ‘27 student interns.
