CLAA and LSP hosts a virtual Latinx career panel

On June 8,2020 the Cornell Latino Alumni Association(CLAA) and Latina/o Studies Program/Latinx Student Success Office hosted a virtual career panel, La Vida Despues de Cornell: The Alumni Journey that brought more than 60 alumni, staff and students together. The virtual event began with panelists introducing themselves followed by CLAA's president, Stephanie Adams Ryan '04 asking a series of questions. Topics included finding jobs after college, getting a job during a pandemic, changing career paths, and knowing what one wants to do following graduation.

Angel Orengo '90 advised students on "having confidence during an interview and selling your skills." Jessica Medel '15 mentioned how it can be difficult to negotiate salaries, but it is important to do so. "Talk to friends in order to know what kind of salary you should be receiving. You may even want to  practice negotiating salaries by playing a game where you try to sell an expensive house to a friend. If you can sell that house, then you can definitely negotiate the salary you want." Jessica recommended the publication, "Getting to Yes", to learn about negotiating salaries. Kendra Cohen '10 recommended using Cornell's CUeLinks to gain advice on specific fields of interests and can come in handy when looking for jobs and trying to navigate career changes.

Lastly, the panel concluded with a piece of practical advice and something they would have done differently in their journeys: Ashley Estrada '16 emphasized the importance of networking while Mauricio Garrido '93 reminded us that "we may fail, but we must remember to keep going.
