Dear Cornell Latino Alumni Association (CLAA) familia,
We are profoundly saddened by the continued brutality towards the Black community, and we stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters to dismantle and fight racism for all people of color. The horrific actions of the past week can not go unanswered and ignored. The Latino community, with its diaspora of diversity, is also deeply affected and impacted by police brutality and these tragic deaths. We grieve not only the events of the past week concerning George Floyd, but also the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and all of the other countless victims that have died over the years. We have faith that if we all raise our voices peacefully and firmly, change must come. As allies, we must say no to the status quo and join the ongoing fight against the racism that has been present in our society since this country's founding. We must support one another through this critical time and be committed now, more than ever, to take action and enact positive change. We must serve as allies to those who most need us.
There are countless ways to begin getting involved. It starts with realizing action is long overdue. For those seeking to make an impact and support, here is a listing of various organizations supporting victims of police violence. Other ways to get involved include: registering to vote in your state; educating yourselves on the candidates and the issues that will be on the ballot at all levels of government; and completing the 2020 Census.
If you haven’t already, please take time to read the Cornell Black Alumni Association's statement regarding recent incidents of police brutality against members of the Black community. We hope you and your family remain safe and well during these times. Remember that we are here for you.
